It seems like Apple is going to shutdown its ties with Samsung completely by the end of 2013. Fresh reports from DigiTimes claim that Apple is not going to purchase any displays from Samsung in 2013 as per a Korean based media report. This bit of news comes in because of lack of RFQ (Request For Quotation) sent to Samsung yet, any company planning to procure components for their devices needs to send an official RFQ to the manufacturer to get a price quote for the components and it looks like Apple has not sent their regular RFQ to samsung for display panels mostly powering iPad and iPad mini.
Apple might most probably be opting for LG, Sharp, Japan Display and AU Optronics to supply displays for iPad and iPad mini in 2013. Apple seem to have already distanced itself from Samsung for the same as Samsung is reportedly supplying only around 28% of the iPad and iPad mini displays with around 800,000 displays and the remaining being supplied by LG.
The dispute between the two companies might be the prime reason Apple is opting out from Samsung, before the patent infringement battle between Apple and Samsung fuelled off Apple was the major components buyer from Samsung with almost $2 billion being paid to Samsung every year back then. But as of now the only way Apple might be associated with Samsung could be with purchase of displays from Sharp in which Samsung recently brought out a 3% stake.
